All umpires must participate in a one-day introductory umpire training session prior to umping any games. CFR will offer an introductory session before the start of the Spring season each year. As well, new umps will be paired with a more experienced umpire for mentoring and practical skills development. Selected umpires will be invited to participate in a 2-day 'advanced' umpire clinic offered at the District 2 level each year. To participate in this clinic, umps must be at least 16 years old and have umped for at least 3 years.
All umpires are eligible to be paid. In keeping with LL's volunteer philosophy, adult umps are welcome to umpire as volunteers. Umpires are paid a flat rate of $20 per game (for both the plate and bases) for the first three years. After three years, and with the recommendation of the UIC, umps will be paid $25 per game. In making his/her recommendation, the UIC will assess the umps contributions to CFR (active participation as umps, reliability, skill level, etc.). The increase in payment is in recognition of the increased skills these more experienced umps have, as well as the additional responsibilities they have assumed, such as mentoring new umps.
