What are District Playdowns?

Playdowns involve all teams in our district in a special tournament which begins in July and continues until the team is eliminated. For teams in the Major division, ‘districts’ is just the first step on the road to the Little League World Series held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Junior division teams play their World Series in Taylor, Michigan, while Senior division teams play their World Series in Bangor, Maine.

Welcome to the CFR Newsletter

June 2011

Dear CFR Little League Member,

Welcome to this edition of the CFR Newsletter. This newsletter is part of the continued effort of the CFR Executive to keep parents and players informed about the league throughout the year. This newsletter contains an update on our Spring Season and details on our upcoming Summer Season.

Season Update

Again this year, CFR has been pleased to see enrolment increase by 10%. We’ve had lots of action on the field. All our house-leagues have welcomed teams from Pinecrest, who are participating in our Rookie, Minor, Major, Junior and Senior house league divisions.

The spring player clinics run by Coach Larry Belanger of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Baseball club were very well-received. Many players had the opportunity to hone their skills in pitching, batting and fielding.  A big thank-you to Coach Larry and his Gee Gee players for their excellent work!

Congratulations to East Nepean for winning the Rookie division of our ‘Catch the Action’ tournament and to Casselman for winning the Minor division. Special thank-you to the Duplessis Team for sponsoring this tournament!

CFR hosts the Roy Belanger Majors Tournament June 11-12 at Frank Ryan Park.  Come check out the action!

All our house-leagues are in the home stretch run, with teams jockeying for position as we near the playoffs. Check out our league standings for more details.

Playoff Weekend

Yes, it’s time to start planning for our year end playoff tournament. Playoff tournaments for Rookie, Minor, and Major will run the weekend of June 18. Playoffs for the Rookie and Minor divisions will be held at Frank Ryan Park, while the Major playoffs will be held at Ainsley Park. The tournament schedule will be communicated to your coaches as soon as possible. But please plan to hold this weekend in your calendar now!

Also, we will be holding a special BBQ for our Tee-Ball players the same weekend at Frank Ryan Park.

For information about Junior and Senior division playoffs, please consult the District 2 website .

If you have ordered photos, they will be distributed during playoff weekend.

Summer Baseball

It seems like we just started our Spring Season, but it’s already time to start preparing for our Summer Baseball Season. Summer Baseball is a more competitive season than house-league where we play representative teams from other leagues in interlock schedules. Our goal is to have as many players as possible play summer baseball. If we have enough players interested, we will have both an “A” and “B” team per division.

Both teams participate in a summer interlock schedule where they play twice a week and have one or more practices per week. “A” and “B” teams will represent CFR at various tournaments in our region throughout the summer. However, “A” teams are the only teams to participate in district playdowns.

We will make every effort to ensure any child who wants to play summer ball finds a place. It may be a CFR team or we may secure a spot on a team in another league if possible.

Registration fees for summer baseball are $125 (plus a refundable uniform deposit of $75). The registration fee for Rookies is only $100. (There is no buy-out or chocolate purchase requirement.)

As there is only one “A” team at each level, we will be running tryouts for each division. All players interested in playing summer baseball should attend these tryouts. There is no cost for tryouts; players register once they have been selected to a team.

Should there be sufficient players in a division to form a “B” team, managers will be selected and announced following tryouts.

The head coaches of the “A” teams are as follows:

Rookie

Rookie Head Coach is Randy Baker and his Assistants are Mike Baldwin, Joey Kramar, and Robin Hardy. Tryouts will be held June 16 and 17 at Frank Ryan Park #2 from 6:00 – 7:30PM.

Minor

Minor Head Coach is Clark Adams and his Assistant is Chris Bartholomew. Tryouts will be held June 16 and 17 at Britannia Park from 6:00-8:00PM.

Major

Major Head Coach is Chris Kazen and his Assistant is Roger

De Abreu.  Tryouts will be held June 16 and June 17 (6:00 – 8:00PM) at Ainsley Park.

Junior

Junior Head Coach is Mike Wallace. Tryouts will be held June 18 at 11:00AM at Hanlon Park.  Further information will be available once the playoff schedule is finalized.

Senior

Senior Head Coach is Art Salter. Further information will be available once the playoff schedule is finalized.

Please contact the head coach or convenor for your division to let them know that your child will be participating in tryouts.  A list of convenors and their emails can be found here.

Registration and uniform distribution for the summer season will take place on Wednesday, June 22 from 6:00-8:00PM.  Players will need to demonstrate proof of residency within CFR’s boundaries by providing three pieces of documentation dated on or before February 1, 2011.  Information about this requirement and examples of documentation needed can be found here.

Please note that summer “A” team players in the Minor, Major and Junior divisions will be participating in a tournament held in Drummondville, Quebec the weekend of June 24-26. Games begin the evening of June 24. Any questions, please contact your convenor or the head coach. Click this link for a letter from CFR President Pete Loyen about summer baseball.

Boston Pizza Sponsorship

Through a sponsorship with the new Boston Pizza at 1640 Carling Avenue, teams/families can raise $$ for CFR!  Every time you dine at this Boston Pizza location, make sure to indicate ‘For CFR’ on your receipt and 10% of what you spend will go to CFR.  Any questions, please contact the cfr_vpadmin@cfrllott.ca .

CFR Day at the Ottawa Fat Cats

The Ottawa Fat Cats will be presenting CFR Executive members with a cheque in support of our league. This will take place on July 1st at their 3:05 game against Barrie.  Come on out and show your support!  Some season passes for children ($5) are still available.  Contact the cfr_vpadmin@cfrllott.ca if you are interested in buying a pass.
